Secret Queens — how it works
- Before the clocks start, each player secretly picks one of their pawns. That piece is actually a queen.
- Your opponent sees it as an ordinary pawn. On your own board it shows as an upside-down pawn.
- It stays hidden as long as it behaves like a pawn. It is revealed the moment it:
- makes a move a pawn couldn't (sideways, backward, more than one step, capturing straight ahead),
- or its queen powers change what's legal on the board — it gives check, pins a piece, or guards a square your opponent's king wanted,
- or it reaches the last rank.
- Once revealed, it's a visible queen for the rest of the game.
- If it's captured while hidden, nobody is told — it looks like taking a pawn. Your opponent may spend the whole game fearing a queen that's already dead.
